Blackpool Tower is a free-standing tower in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. The tower is 158 metres (518 ft) tall and is the tallest structure in Blackpool. The tower is built on a concrete foundation and is constructed from steel and cast iron. The tower has a diameter of 12.5 metres (41 ft) at its base and tapers to 8.2 metres (27 ft) at its top.
The tower is designed to withstand strong winds. The tower's foundation is 2.7 metres (8.8 ft) thick and is buried 12 metres (39 ft) below the ground. The tower's steel framework is also designed to withstand high winds. The tower has a total of 1,250 tonnes of steel.
The tower sways in the wind due to its height and the fact that it is not completely rigid. The tower's sway is monitored by sensors and the tower is closed to the public if the sway exceeds certain limits.
