Mission Santa Clara de Asís Today: A Living Historic Landmark

Founded January 12, 1777, by the Franciscan Order, Mission Santa Clara de Asís is the 8th of 21 California missions. Located on the campus of Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley, it functions today as a vibrant parish church, a National Historic Landmark, and a university chapel.

The Complex

• The Church: Rebuilt in 1929 after multiple fires/earthquakes, it replicates the 1825 adobe structure with whitewashed walls, red tile roof, and a four-bell campanario. Interior features a reredos, pulpit, and choir loft.
• The Museum: Housed in a former granary, it displays mission-era artifacts: vestments, tools, Native American baskets, and documents.
• The Cemetery: Resting place for Ohlone neophytes, Spanish soldiers, and Franciscan friars—a poignant record of colonial encounter.
• The Gardens: Courtyards with olive trees, citrus, roses, and a historic olive press; a tranquil oasis amid the campus.

Visitor Experience

Open daily for self-guided tours, the mission hosts Masses, weddings, concerts, and educational programs. It stands as a rare mission still serving its original religious purpose within a major university—bridging 18th-century history and 21st-century campus life.
