How to Get an Irish Seaman's Discharge Book for Cruise Ship Work

An Irish Seaman's Discharge Book (SDB) is your continuous service record, required for STCW compliance and cruise employment. Issued by the Irish Maritime Administration (IMA).

Eligibility

• Irish or EU/EEA citizen.
• Age 18+.
• Valid ENG1 or ML5 medical certificate (seafarer medical).
• Basic STCW certificates: PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR, PSA (or STCW VI/6).

Required Documents

• Completed SDB application form (IMA website).
• Passport photo (recent, 35×45 mm).
• Passport/National ID copy.
• Proof of address (utility bill <3 months).
• Seafarer medical (original + copy).
• STCW certificates (copies).
• Letter from employer/crewing agency (confirming engagement).
• Fee: €55 (subject to change; check IMA site).

Process

1. Gather all documents.
2. Submit by post to: Irish Maritime Administration, Harbour Centre, Dublin 1, D01 E6X0 — or in person (appointment recommended).
3. IMA processes (5–10 working days typical).
4. Collect SDB in person or via registered post.

Critical Notes

• Non-EU citizens: Must hold Irish Residence Permit (Stamp 4) + work permit; eligibility complex—consult IMA.
• Cruise lines: Most require SDB before joining. Start application 4–6 weeks pre-join date.
• Renewal: SDB doesn't expire, but fill pages → apply for continuation.
• STCW: Keep certificates current; refresher courses every 5 years.
