$$ d = sqrt((2 * R * h) + h^2) $$
Where:
- d = the distance you can see (in kilometers)
- R = the radius of the Earth (approximately 6,378 kilometers)
- h = your height above the water (in meters)
For example, if you are standing at sea level, you can see about 5 kilometers across the ocean. If you are on a cliff 100 meters high, you can see about 36 kilometers. And if you are in an airplane flying 1,000 meters high, you can see about 123 kilometers.
