How many miles can you see across the ocean?

The distance you can see across the ocean depends on the height of your vantage point and the curvature of the Earth. To calculate the maximum distance you can see, you can use the formula:

$$ d = sqrt((2 * R * h) + h^2) $$

Where:

- d = the distance you can see (in kilometers)

- R = the radius of the Earth (approximately 6,378 kilometers)

- h = your height above the water (in meters)

For example, if you are standing at sea level, you can see about 5 kilometers across the ocean. If you are on a cliff 100 meters high, you can see about 36 kilometers. And if you are in an airplane flying 1,000 meters high, you can see about 123 kilometers.
