What Are Cheap Family Vacations With Two-Year-Olds?

Many parents of toddlers cut down on their vacation time as a family while children are young, or they vacation closer to home. This is a shame, because young children love the adventure of being somewhere new, and a vacation does not have to be luxurious or exotic to make a big impression on little kids. With some creative thinking and forward planning, families with toddlers in tow can enjoy exciting and inexpensive vacations.
  1. Camping

    • Camping is cheap, and the whole process of setting up a tent and sleeping outdoors can be a lot of fun for 2-year-olds. Carefully supervise children around fire and open water, but otherwise let them enjoy the fun and freedom of playing, eating and sleeping outdoors. Pack a portable crib to contain the kiddies when they get tired and they--or you--need a rest from running around. Modern campsites often offer children's playgrounds, and in some cases, organized kids' activities.

    Vacations By Train

    • Train journeys can be a cheap way to cover a long distance if you book tickets in advance or with a special offer. Often, rail lines offer deals and discounts for families with children. Taking young children on a train allows you all to enjoy the scenery free from driving duties. Rail routes are often more scenic than interstates and highway rest stops. Most train seats are large enough for a 2-year-old to take a comfortable nap. Plus, you are free to walk around and stretch your legs at any time. Taking the train to see distant relatives or friends makes for an adventurous and economical family vacation.

    Villa Share

    • Large villas that accommodate multiple families are available in many coastal U.S. states, such as Florida, and also across Europe. If you book early, travel outside the peak season, and share the cost with another family or families, the cost per person per night can be cheaper than camping. Vacationing with a larger group also means that you can pool childcare duties, and each set of parents can have some time off from babysitting during the vacation.
