Spanning a range of nearly 1,200 square miles, Yosemite National Park is a natural wildlife area that offers deep valleys, large meadows and a vast wilderness area to explore. Families from all over enjoy camping that is entirely free except for a nominal entrance charge for your vehicle. Reservations are taken on a first-come basis. While at the park, you can take your family hiking on one of the dozens of trails, each with its own level of difficulty and terrain. Other activities include birdwatching, fishing and picnicking.
A trip to Los Angeles does not necessarily have to be expensive. A number of budget motels are within the city and surrounding towns. While here with your family, you can partake in several activities that do not cost anything. Many families enjoy strolling down the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, where they can interact with celebrity impersonators and take pictures next to their favorite celebrity's star. You can also visit the Getty Museum, which features world-renowned paintings, sculptures and photography. A day trip here is free except for a small fee for parking. Los Angeles is a great city for sightseeing as well. Take the scenic car route on Mulholland Drive that overlooks Hollywood or walk around Santa Monica Pier by the ocean.
Located about 100 miles north of San Diego, Huntington Beach has eight miles of uninterrupted coastal space and is an affordable place to visit with your family. Beaches only charge small fees for parking, so you can spend all day on the sand without spending too much money. For free activities, spend some time watching surfers ride the waves or visit the International Surfing Museum. Rent a boogie board for as little as $5 and ride the waves yourself. For food, you can purchase hot dogs and hamburgers from one of the mobile stands as opposed to spending money in a restaurant. Lodging is cheaper the farther you get from the beach, but some budget motels on the Pacific Coast Highway have deals for around $100 per night during off-peak times.
