Monterey Bay Aquarium on the coast of California just south of Santa Cruz is a family dream vacation. With exhibits that both entice and excite its visitors, guests have the opportunity to come close to our marine friends through a variety of exhibits, including one especially dedicated to the mysterious seahorses and another featuring giant octopus. Young children will enjoy the Behind-the-Scenes Tour where they will have the chance to interact with the staff. Enjoy "morning rounds" where visitors as young as 8 can feed the animals. Children from 5 to 14 can take part in aquarium sleepovers and enjoy a variety of activities. Dining and shopping are on site. Dress warm as daily temperatures can fluctuate and the coastal winds may pick up throughout the day. Tickets are available online, and lodging in the Monterey area is readily available, however, making this a family day trip turns this into a very affordable family experience.

Yosemite National Park, located in the Sierras, is a family treasure of activity. Yosemite is best enjoyed during warm months from May through September and can be an action-filled one-day trip or a week-long adventure. Activities in the park range from moderate to challenging hikes, horseback riding, biking and fishing. The most affordable choice for lodging is camping, and reservations fill up quickly. There are several camping locations in the valley as well as high mountain areas in the north and south side of the park. In addition to camping, visitors can also make reservations at The Lodge and fully furnished rooms at Yosemite West. There are many options for lodging right outside the park; parking is limited inside the park, and shuttles are available.
