Built in 1892 for the Portland banker and entrepreneur -- and eventual senator -- Henry Winslow Corbett, the Sou'Wester Lodge is an eclectic retreat for visitors desiring affordable accommodations coupled with involved proprietors and unique lodging options. Décor is self-described as "early Salvation army." The traditional rooms, as well as trailers and cabins, offer up plenty of rustic kitsch. While pets are allowed, smoking is not. Guests are encouraged to leave their thoughts in the journals provided in each room. The lodge operates on a "make your own breakfast" system. Once you've finished your breakfast, walk the few steps to the beach.
Guests who want an affordable hotel along the water will find refuge at the Edgewater Inn. This traditional motel offers wireless Internet and HBO in each room, and most rooms offer a view of the water. The World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame, where you can find the kite to suit your style, is just out the door. This inn is within walking distance of town. The hotel offers dinner at the onsite Lightship Restaurant.
This hotel is next to the Arch at the Bolstad Beach, the main beach entrance. The hotel and some of the rooms have panoramic views of the water. The hotel serves a full complimentary breakfast that includes cereal, bagels and waffles. Certain rooms include kitchenettes. Pets are welcome for a nominal fee. If you have a large family or visit as a large group, connecting rooms are available.
The Discovery Coast Cottage Inn, a few yards from the beach, is also near downtown shops, restaurants and the boardwalk. The hotel provides free beach wagons. This family-friendly inn includes a book, game and video lending library and it has picnic and play areas for children. Rooms feature a fireplace, 800-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, cable TV, VCR/DVD player, refrigerator and a private bath.
