Liechtenstein is a microscopically tiny country in Central Europe. Vaduz is the capital, and with a population of just over 5,000, it is the second largest city in Liechtenstein.
Expect limited options. Because Liechtenstein is such a tiny country, it does not have many hotels, and those that it does have are expensive, including the hotels in Vaduz. There is one youth hostel in the country, which provides very cheap accommodations, but it closes in the winter.
Try camping. Liechtenstein, with its picturesque mountains, has some beautiful natural scenery that is perfect for camping. Look for campgrounds just outside of Vaduz for cheap accommodations.
Stay in Austria or Switzerland. If you are not staying at the youth hostel, then your best chance of finding cheap accommodations is to look just over the border. Since travel between Austria and Switzerland and Liechtenstein is so easy, it will not cause you too much inconvenience if your hotel is not right in Vaduz.
Plan to use the bus. Vaduz has an excellent and cheap bus system, and it is a quick way to get around the city. Buy a 7-day unlimited use card if you are going to be staying for a while.
Do the driving. If you are not riding the bus, then driving your own car is your best bet for getting around town.
Take a train tour. Vaduz gives train tours of the city on a daily basis during the summer. These 35-minute rides are a great way to relax while you learn about the city and its history.
Visit a wine cellar. Liechtenstein produces some quality wines, and Vaduz has a couple of places you can go to sample these wines, as well as tour the lovely wine trails.
Visit the National Museum. This 42-room museum is one of Vaduz's prime attractions. With exhibits on everything from national to local history and even natural history, a pleasant and educational afternoon can be spent exploring the many offerings of this magnificent museum.
