Emancipation/Rights: A minor's parental obligations can be removed and they can become legally emancipated. Emancipation gives minors many of the rights and obligations of adults, including managing their own finances, property, and affairs, entering into contracts, and making their own medical decisions. Minors can petition the court to become emancipated upon proof of:
- Sufficient income and means of support
- Capacity to manage their own finances
- Best interests of the minor
- Consent of the parents or legal guardian, unless compelling circumstances exist
A pregnant 17 year old may be able to leave her parents' house without their permission in Las Vegas to live with her boyfriend and his family if she is emancipated. Emancipation is a legal process that allows minors to become legally independent from their parents or legal guardians. There are a number of requirements that must be met in order to be emancipated, including:
* The minor must be at least 16 years old.
* The minor must be able to demonstrate that they are capable of managing their own affairs.
* The minor must have a stable income and a place to live.
* The minor must have the consent of their parents or legal guardians, unless they have been abused or neglected.
If a pregnant 17 year old meets these requirements, she may be able to file a petition for emancipation with the court. If the petition is granted, she will be legally considered an adult and will be able to make her own decisions about where to live and with whom to live.
