When did explorers travel to New Jersey?

New Jersey was first explored by European explorers in the 16th century. In 1524, the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed along the coast of what is now New Jersey, and in 1609, the English explorer Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River, which forms part of the border between New Jersey and New York.
