There were several foreshocks leading up to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The largest foreshock, with a magnitude of 7.2, occurred on March 9, 2011, just two days before the main event. This foreshock was felt as far away as Tokyo and caused some damage in the Miyagi prefecture.
Aftershocks
The Tohoku earthquake was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a magnitude 7.4 aftershock on March 11 and a magnitude 7.9 aftershock on March 12. These aftershocks caused further damage and disruption to the affected areas, and they also triggered landslides and tsunamis.
The aftershock sequence from the Tohoku earthquake lasted for several months, with smaller earthquakes continuing to occur in the region for years afterward.
