The Getty's collection is vast, and it could easily take three days to view
all of its holdings, so you really have to be selective. The best way
to view the museum is to check out the website for special exhibits and
schedule your visit accordingly. Also, the museum offers many free
programs, so be sure to check those out on the website. Finally, plan to
spend between two and three hours in the museum.
Peak Season
The museum is open 364 days a year, and it is closed only on Christmas
Day. Peak season runs from mid-June to August. During this time, parking
can be difficult (although there is extra parking if needed); you can avoid
parking issues by taking public transportation. Be sure to bring a sweater
or light jacket, as it is often windy and cool at the museum.
Shoulder Season
If you visit during the spring (March to May) or the fall (September to
November), the weather will be mild, and the crowds will be somewhat
less than they are during the summer. Spring is also a good time to visit, as
many flowers bloom on the grounds.
Off-Season
Winter is a good time to visit the Getty if you are looking to avoid the
crowds. The weather can be cold and wet, so you will need to dress
accordingly. However, the museum is less crowded, and there is plenty
of free parking.
