Vasco Núñez de Balboa was a Spanish explorer who is best known for having discovered the Pacific Ocean. He was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain, in 1475. He first went to the Americas in 1500, and he later participated in several expeditions to the Caribbean and Central America. In 1513, he joined an expedition led by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, which discovered the Pacific Ocean. Balboa led a separate expedition to the Pacific Ocean in 1517, and he was the first European to sight it from the American mainland. He died in 1519.
