Families volunteering at Bethlehem Farm, a Catholic community in Appalachia, help residents in need from the surrounding area by teaching sustainable living practices. For families looking for an international volunteer experience, Project FIAT is a U.S. based Catholic organization that sends volunteers to San Salvador, El Salvador in South America to help needy locals in a variety of ways. Volunteers are given tasks and projects that may include helping children with schoolwork, visiting senior citizens and feeding the hungry in soup kitchens. Families with children ages 16 and older are welcome for stays of eight to ten days and accommodations are in a retreat home in a safe neighborhood of San Salvador.

Franciscans for the Poor help disadvantaged residents of Cincinnati, Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Volunteer work is outreach to the poor including serving in soup kitchens, helping in day care centers, homeless shelters and housing projects. Stays are six days long for families with children ages 14 and older and volunteers stay in a community house.
