Abbreviated SNA for its proximity to the county capital, Santa Ana, Orange County or John Wayne Airport is the county's major transportation hub for both commercial and general aviation. The airport covers 500 acres and features both a 5,700-foot main runway and a 2,887-foot general aviation runway. It serves about nine million passengers and processes more than 15,000 tons of cargo each year. Local law enforcement bases its operations here; so do numerous charter, flight instruction, aircraft storage and airplane sales facilities.

The county is served by several private heliports for medical, corporate or government use. For example, the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Heliport in Orange serves the needs of the medical hospital. The Newport Beach Police Heliport is used for law enforcement transport and surveillance. Finally, the Hughes Aircraft Company Heliport is used for delivery of supplies, helicopter testing and employee transport for the aviation giant.
Though some heliports allow nonassociated aircraft to land, such landings require advanced permission.
