How to Study in Spain

For many students, studying abroad provides an opportunity to experience a foreign culture closely. Joining a foreign study program offers the chance to learn a foreign language, interact with different individuals and immerse one's self in an entirely different way of living. Many study-abroad options exist for places all over the world, including Spain.

Instructions

    • 1

List the options available to you at your university, and decide which is best for you. You might be most interested in studying in a particular city, or you might want a program with specific area of study. Other options include studying abroad for one semester or for an entire year, such as a junior year abroad program that would provide you with your junior year's credits.

    • 2

Meet with your academic adviser to determine which programs your university or college will accept in order to apply the credits from the Spanish program to your transcripts. If the Spanish program you're interested in involves a junior year abroad, your university will provide a list of approved Spanish educational institutions. If you wish to study a particular subject, discuss the program and the options for receiving approved credits for it with your adviser or the relevant department head.

    • 3

Review the program that interests you. Contact the university or institution that operates the program and find out what you need to do to apply. In addition to a formal application, the institution will need a copy of your transcripts. Each institution will have its own procedures, but in general, you will need to submit an application fee and, upon acceptance, a deposit of the tuition payment.

    • 4

Obtain travelers' insurance that will cover your health needs during the time that you will study in Spain. A travelers' insurance plan will ensure that, if necessary, a Spanish doctor can treat you while you reside in Spain and that your health insurance will reimburse you for approved health expenses. Check with your university to find out if you can obtain travelers' insurance through your student health plan.

    • 5

Check out options for accommodations during your studies. Larger universities often have special student dorms for overseas students, but if you decide to study in a smaller institution or town, or if you plan to embark on an individual study plan, you will need to find a boarding house or rent (or share) an apartment. Your Spanish educational institution can point you toward possible lodgings, either with other English speakers or, if you want to immerse yourself in Spanish society, with Spaniards.
