Create a list of your interests and skills to help determine what kind of volunteer work to do. Include any languages you speak, hobbies, professional skills and areas of expertise.
Use this list to help you decide what type of volunteer opportunity to pursue. For example, if you have experience in teaching, you may consider an opportunity to volunteer in a school. If you speak Spanish, consider volunteering in a Spanish-speaking country.
Determine the amount of time you have available. Some organizations, such as the Peace Corps, require a two-year commitment, while other programs offer an opportunity to volunteer for a few weeks or months. Request time off from work and make arrangements for your house, bills and pets while you're gone.
Research carefully to choose the right program for your needs and the needs of those you want to serve. Ask about the program goals and how long the organization has been operating in each country to which it sends volunteers. Question the program safety record, learn what kind of support is offered to volunteers, and determine the program costs. Ask for a list of references to call and interview about their experiences with the organization.
A valid passport is required for international travel. To apply for a U.S. passport, visit your nearest passport facility or acceptance center and submit the appropriate paperwork and photos. Depending on where you travel, you may also need a visa to enter the country.
