Choose the organization you want to work for. There are hundreds of charity and volunteer groups working in Africa, each with different requirements. If you have special skills such as medicine, engineering or teaching, look at charities specific to those fields, such as the medical organization Médecins Sans Frontières. Some groups can afford to support your living expenses, while others will expect you to pay to work abroad. This method of fundraising is known as "voluntourism."
Ensure that you have the necessary travel documents for travel to your host country. Some countries will require visas, while others may not for short stays. Insurance coverage will be mandatory in some countries. Your volunteer organization will know the exact requirements, but start planning early.
Check that your immunizations are up to date. Especially if it's your first time visiting Africa, there will be diseases you haven't been exposed to. Some shots can take up to two weeks to become effective, so visit your doctor well in advance. Four to six weeks before leaving is best.
Invest in appropriate travel clothing. Many people believe that Africa's weather is always warm, but it can vary from region to region and season to season. Check on the climate of your host country.
