Choose the procedure you want to use for redeeming miles by calling your frequent flyer program's customer service number or checking its official website for miles redemption options. While most popular programs allow online, phone or in-person redemption, there are those that can only be availed by phone, and others that are only possible through in-person requests at the airline's ticketing or booking office.
Check the number of miles available in your account by either calling the customer service number or viewing your online account. Make sure you have enough miles to cover your intended travel destination.
Choose your preferred date of travel. Most award flights are subject to availability, and the date, season, general demand and destination are crucial in determining if your desired departure date is amenable. Ideally, booking as early as a few months before the intended departure gives you the luxury to choose your preferred date.
Begin the redemption by logging into your online account, calling the frequent flyer program customer service or going to a ticketing office. Depending on the program, you must first fill up a soft or hard copy of a miles redemption form. The form must provide key information including your membership number, personal details, intended travel dates, intended destination and number of miles for redemption.
If using the online platform, make sure you submit the form, then print out your confirmation document. If redeeming by phone, you may receive a confirmation number or even a printable miles redemption form to be sent to your email or made available through your online account. If redeeming in person, simply get the printed copy from the customer service representative attending to your request.
Pay taxes or other miscellaneous fees, if needed. Taxes are usually required for the free ticket received via miles redemption. You may confirm with your frequent flyer program for appropriate information about tax payments on free tickets issued.
