In 1892, Lizzie Borden allegedly killed her father and stepmother in this quaint Fall River, Massachusetts, house. Although Borden was acquitted, the events that took place that night live on in infamy and, oddly enough, in a children's rhyme ("Lizzie Borden took an axe . . ."). Travelers still flock to Fall River, a sleepy mill city south of Boston and near the Rhode Island border, to investigate the Borden murders. Such travelers can now spend the night in the Borden house, the same location where the murders occurred. The Bed & Breakfast offers two bedroom suites, one belonging to Lizzie and her sister and the other belonging to her parents. You may also stay in the John V. Morse room, the place where Lizzie Borden's stepmother's body was discovered. It is in the Morse room that people have seen ghostly black mists and indentions of a body on an otherwise untouched bed. Breakfast includes Borden family favorites such as johnny-cakes and coffee as well as contemporary breakfast fare. Tours of the home are available.

Head north to the bucolic village of Concord for a haunted inn with a not-so-violent past. Concord's Colonial Inn, situated near the town's center, is home to a room with a rather interesting past. Room 24 has been surrounded by controversy since a woman staying there with her husband in 1966 saw a gray apparition floating near the edge of the bed. There have been other reports of other presences, at least seven, in the room. The room has been investigated by paranormal experts, and most agree that the room is haunted. Room 24 is the oldest part of the Inn and was once part of the house built and owned by Captain John Minot. Room 24 is available for all curious travelers. The Inn's owners contend that the other rooms are ghost-free, but that is left to be discovered.

Travelers visiting the charming and historic village of Deerfield in western Massachusetts are encouraged to stay at the Deerfield Inn should they wish to encounter some of the Inn's more ghostly inhabitants. Folks have seen a ghost who travels throughout the Inn dressed only in her 1930s-era nightclothes. This is the ghost of Cora Carlisle, who owned the Inn in the 1930s. The other specter, named Hershel, lays claim to Room 148. Hershel is a spirit who loves to make a mess. He will throw magazines throughout the room and rearrange bed pillows. He likes to amuse children by rocking a single chair on the Inn's porch.
