How to Burn Wood and Coal

Wood has been used to make fires since man first made fire. The use of coal is a relatively modern concept that will help fires burn hotter for longer be they indoors or outside. Making a fire with coal is slightly more problematic than a plain wood fire as keeping the coals alight requires patience and timing. By following a few simple tips, using coal will help create a great fire for keeping warm and cooking on.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange three pieces of dry wood kindling into a tripod and place some dry paper underneath.

    • 2

Light a firelighter with some matches or a cigarette lighter and place on top of the paper. Allow the wood to burn down before adding the coal. Alternatively, set fire to the paper and keep adding to it until the wood catches.

    • 3

Add a few pieces of coal at a time, only adding the next pieces when the ones already in the fire start to glow red hot. Blow on the coals to provide extra oxygen or fan with a piece of cardboard.

    • 4

Stoke the fire occasionally with larger logs of wood to keep the fire going and add extra coals when the previous ones start turning to ash. Adding extra coal too quickly will suffocate the fire.
