Sydney to Port Douglas by Road: 2,500 km, 30–35 Hours Driving

The most direct coastal route from Sydney, NSW to Port Douglas, QLD spans approximately 2,500 km (1,550 miles) via the Pacific Highway (M1/A1). Pure driving time is 30–35 hours without stops.

Realistic Planning: This is a 4–6 day journey. Recommended overnight stops: Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay/Gold Coast, Brisbane, Rockhampton, Mackay, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Cairns. The Bruce Highway north of Brisbane is two-lane in sections; allow for rest, fuel, food, and sightseeing (beaches, rainforests, reefs).

Check traffic apps (Google Maps, Waze) for roadworks, flooding (common in wet season Nov–Apr), and fatigue management. Flying to Cairns (2.5 hrs) then driving 1 hr north is far more common for time-constrained travelers.
