Look up the maximum weight your vehicle can tow. Towing excessively heavy trailers can damage a transmission. All vehicles come with owner's manuals that list the amount of weight that can be safely towed. Lightweight pop-up campers use aluminum frames to decrease the weight load. These campers provide more space for less weight. Adding a transmission cooler to your vehicle is one way to slightly exceed the weight limit, but before you do that discuss the option with a mechanic or the vehicle's dealer service department.
List the number of people who you are likely to go camping with in the tent camper. The list might include your kids, your friends or other family members. Consider the sleeping arrangements that they prefer. The beds in camping trailers typically specify two people per bed. Anyone who is large or does not like sharing a bed will cut down on the total sleeping capacity of the tent camper.
Determine the style of camping you like. If you like all the luxuries of home while you camp, consider a tent camper that comes with a sink, stove, refrigerator, running water, hot water tank, electrical and water hookups, a toilet and even a shower. If you do not mind cooking outside, a basic camping tent trailer may cost less and leave more room inside for walking space, storage or sleeping.
