How to Replace Tent Netting

The Outdoor Industry Association reported in 2010 that camping attracts more than 44 million people yearly. With such a large group of people enjoying this outdoor activity, dealing with bugs is a concern for all. Bug candles, sprays and fires help keep the bugs away during the day, but only the netting on a tent will keep them away at night. If the netting on your tent is torn, it will require a patch or replacement net to keep out the bugs.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old netting from the area of the tent that needs replacing by cutting it close to the tent edge, taking care not to cut the tent. Hold the netting tight in one hand while cutting around the area.

    • 2

Cut the new piece of netting to fit the area, leaving an inch margin as you cut the new netting. This margin makes sewing the new netting on easier.

    • 3

Sew the new piece of netting onto the tent, using a sewing machine if available, by sewing the material in a zig-zag pattern. Keep the stitches as close together as possible to prevent any gaps in the netting.

    • 4

Remove any extra netting, taking care not to cut the newly-installed netting or the tent. This is only necessary for cosmetic reasons and will not interfere with the netting's ability to keep bugs out.

    • 5

Assemble the tent completely to ensure that the new netting is firmly in place. Use a hand sewing needle to fix any areas that may not be completely closed.
