Dirty Clothes in Antarctica? Research Stations Have Laundry
No Permanent Residents, But Clean Clothes for Researchers
Antarctica has no permanent population—only seasonal researchers and support staff at ~70 research stations (max ~5,000 summer, ~1,000 winter).
Laundry Facilities
- All major stations (McMurdo, Amundsen-Scott, Rothera, Concordia, etc.) have commercial laundry machines.
- Water from melted ice/snow (energy-intensive) or reverse osmosis.
- Clothing issued by national programs (extreme cold weather gear + daily wear).
- Regular laundry schedules; specialized cleaning for field gear.
Field Conditions
In deep field camps (weeks/months), laundry may be limited—hand-wash in meltwater, wear rotation. But no one "suffers dirty clothes" as a systemic issue.
Waste Management
Greywater treated; solids shipped out per Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol). Zero discharge goal.
