In Italy, Santa Claus (also called Babbo Natale) is not the primary gift-bearer. La Befana, a folkloric and whimsical character, is the main Christmas gift-bringer in Italy. She is an elderly woman who delivers presents to children on the night of January 5 (Epiphany Eve) by flying through the air on her broomstick and entering homes through the chimneys.
