What is Antarctica covered by ice?
Antarctica is covered by a massive ice sheet with an average thickness of 2,160 metres (7,090 feet). The ice sheet contains roughly 70% of the world's fresh water and, if melted, would raise global sea levels by approximately 60 metres (200 feet). The bulk of the ice is found in East Antarctica, where the ice sheet reaches a thickness of over 4,776 metres (15,670 feet) in places.
