Why is Antarctica so severe in winter?

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on Earth. In winter, the average temperature can drop to -57°C (-71°F), and the wind can reach speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour (200 miles per hour). There are several reasons why Antarctica is so severe in winter.
