Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first two people to reach the top of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Edmund Hillary was a bee-keeper from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay was a Sherpa from Nepal. They were part of a British expedition led by John Hunt.
