Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and highest continent on Earth, and it is also home to a unique and diverse array of animal life. Low Temperatures
The average temperature in Antarctica is -57°F (-49°C), and the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth was -128.6°F (-89.2°C) at the Soviet Union's Vostok Station in 1983. These extreme low temperatures make it difficult for animals to survive, as they must be able to maintain their body heat in order to stay alive. Many animals have adapted to the cold by developing thick layers of fur or fat, and some have even evolved the ability to hibernate during the coldest months of the year.
Dryness
Antarctica is also the driest continent on Earth, with an average precipitation of less than 2 inches (5 cm) per year. This lack of moisture makes it difficult for plants to grow, and as a result, there are few land animals in Antarctica. High Altitude
