Who were the first people to climb mount Everest and did they succeed?

On May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa from Nepal, became the first people to successfully summit Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain. They reached the summit at 11:30 am local time after setting out from their base camp on the South Col on May 26. The expedition to Mount Everest, led by John Hunt, was part of the British Mount Everest Expedition of 1953, which was organized to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
