What animals leave Antarctica in winter?
Many seabirds, marine mammals, and whales leave Antarctica in winter. Seabirds, such as albatrosses, petrels, and skuas, migrate north to warmer waters where food is more abundant. Marine mammals, such as seals and whales, also leave Antarctica in winter to find food in warmer waters. For example, humpback whales migrate to warmer waters near the equator to breed and give birth. Emperor penguins, however, stay in Antarctica during the winter and huddle together to keep warm.
