Is a Puja Ceremony Performed Before Climbing Everest?

No standardized puja is mandated or universally practiced before Everest climbs. The claim confuses several distinct practices:

What Actually Happens

  • Buddhist puja at Base Camp: Many expeditions (especially Sherpa-led) request a lama to perform a puja (ritual offering) at EBC for safe passage. This is cultural, not mandatory.
  • Khumbiyila ceremony: Traditional Sherpa propitiation of Chomolungma (Everest's goddess) at Tengboche or Pangboche monasteries before approaching the mountain.
  • Hindu puja: Some Indian climbers perform personal/family pujas. Not a mountaineering requirement.
  • Permit formalities: Nepal's Department of Tourism requires liaison officer, insurance, garbage deposit, royalty fee ($11,000 pp spring). No religious ritual.

Cultural Context

For Sherpas, Everest is Chomolungma ("Goddess Mother of the World")—a sacred entity. Climbing without spiritual preparation is unthinkable. For foreign clients, the puja is often a photographed "cultural experience." The distinction matters.

No government, guiding association, or mountain authority requires a puja. It's a personal/community choice rooted in Himalayan Buddhist tradition.
