India's 14 Major Snow-Fed Rivers
India has 14 major rivers primarily fed by Himalayan snow and glacial melt:
- Indus - Trans-Himalayan, flows to Arabian Sea
- Ganga (Ganges) - Central Himalaya, most sacred, flows to Bay of Bengal
- Yamuna - Ganga's largest tributary, joins at Prayagraj
- Brahmaputra - Trans-Himalayan, flows east then south through Bangladesh
- Chenab - Indus tributary, largest by volume
- Jhelum - Indus tributary, Kashmir Valley
- Ravi - Indus tributary, Punjab
- Beas - Indus tributary, Himachal/Punjab
- Sutlej - Indus tributary, longest of the five Punjab rivers
- Chambal - Yamuna tributary, central India
- Betwa - Yamuna tributary, central India
- Ken - Yamuna tributary, central India
- Son - Ganga tributary, central India
- Narmada - West-flowing, central India (rain-fed upper, snow-fed sources)
Note on Narmada
The Narmada's inclusion is debated—its upper reaches receive snowmelt from the Satpura Range, but it's primarily rain-fed. The first 10 (Indus system + Ganga/Yamuna/Brahmaputra) are unequivocally snow-fed.
These rivers sustain ~500 million people across the Indo-Gangetic Plain and beyond.
