Mardi Gras Parade Elements: Floats, Beads, Doubloons, Moon Pies, King Cake, Zydeco

A New Orleans Mardi Gras parade is a mobile theater of excess, tradition, and community. Here's what you'll see, catch, and hear.

Floats (The Stage)

Krewe-owned, tractor-pulled, 20–50 ft long. Themes: mythology, satire, pop culture, local lore. Riders (masked, costumed) throw from upper decks. Signature floats: Bacchus (Bacchagator), Endymion (super-floats), Zulu (coconuts).

Throws (The Loot)

• Beads: Plastic (standard), glass (vintage/krewe-specific), LED, metallic. Colors: purple (justice), green (faith), gold (power).
• Doubloons: Aluminum/anodized coins, krewe-logo + year. Collectible; some silver/gold for krewe members.
• Cups: Plastic, krewe-branded. "Cup trees" on ladders.
• Specialty: Zulu coconuts (hand-decorated, highly prized), Muses shoes, Nyx purses, Tucks toilet plungers.
• Moon Pies: Double-decker marshmallow-graham sandwich, chocolate-coated. Thrown by many krewes; eaten instantly.

King Cake (The Season)

Not a parade throw (usually) but ubiquitous Jan 6–Fat Tuesday. Brioche ring, cinnamon, cream cheese/fruit filling, purple/green/gold sugar. Plastic baby inside → finder buys next cake / hosts party.

Music: Zydeco & Brass

Zydeco: Accordion + rubboard (frottoir), Creole French, driving rhythm. Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco, Nathan Williams. Played at balls, clubs, street parties.
Brass bands: Rebirth, Hot 8, Soul Rebels — second lines, jazz funerals, parade escort.

Structure

Parade = Captain + Lieutenants + Maids/Dukes + King/Queen + Floats + Bands + Throws. Krewe = social org (old-line: Comus, Rex; super-krewes: Endymion, Bacchus, Orpheus; neighborhood: 'tit Rex, Chewbacchus).

Experience Tip

Ladder seat (kids), comfortable shoes, water, designated meeting spot, don't reach under floats. Laissez les bons temps rouler.
