How to Spend the Perfect Weekend in Sausalito

This stunning little city just north of the Golden Gate Bridge has undergone quite a transformation since its funky bohemian days of the sixties and seventies. Today, Sausalito is an upscale escape of chic galleries, fancy inns and restaurants, enhanced by sweeping panoramas of the San Francisco Bay Area.

      For a unique look at the San Francisco Bay and its connecting waterways, stop by the Bay Model Visitor Center on Bridgeway. The centerpiece of the site is a working scale model of the Bay and adjoining River Delta systems, which will fascinate children and adults alike. A short film, guided and self-guided tours of the center are also provided.

      Have a sophisticated shopping sojourn on Caledonia Street or Bridgeway. Snazzy art galleries and a bounty of boutiques make up the bulk of the boulevard.

      Savor Northern California's superb seafood with a night out of fine dining. Dungeness crab, fresh salmon and Pacific snapper are three favorites, but those more inclined to land delights will find numerous Californian and Italian dining options.

      Have an affordable bay outing by taking the ferry service to San Francisco-where it stops near the popular Fisherman's Wharf-and/or Angel Island or Tiburon. Food and beverages, including cocktails, are available. There's no better way to gain a fresh perspective on the layout of the Bay Area.

      See Mother Nature at her best at the nearby Marin Headlands, with remote and rustic ridges and cliffs, plus some of the most spectacular views on the planet. The Headlands are part of the massive Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which also includes the unforgettable Muir Woods, with inviting trails wrapping past towering coast redwoods.

      For something a bit different, visit Heath Ceramics on Gate Five Road, which creates and showcases high-quality ceramic pieces. Factory tours are available and pieces by talented local artisans are also on display.

      Take a stroll along the city's marvelous marina, where all kinds of seafaring vessels are on display, including some of the infamous local houseboats that have been present in Sausalito for decades. The most eye-catching and well-known of these is the Taj Mahal, a much smaller, floating version of the original.
