      See what's going on at the Wexner Center for the Arts, a modern, fortress-like structure showcasing modern art, off-beat live performances and films you won't likely find anywhere else. Located on the Ohio State University Campus, the Center also hosts a bookstore and café. It's been a huge supporter of local artists, including furnishing artist residencies and commissioning numerous art projects.

      Stop by Franklin Park to see its much-heralded Conservatory, a wonderful botanical garden hailing back to the late 19th Century and extending to visitors an eclectic array of living plant collections. Themed areas include Himalayan Mountains, a Tropical Rainforest, Desert, and a Bonsai Courtyard. A welcome surprise is a treasure trove of glass works by the great Dale Chihuly.

      Spend an hour or two in another world-at the German Village Society a bit south of downtown. This restored district has wonderful architecture, with old brick buildings and vintage Victorians housing a variety of cafés, galleries and fun shops.

      Consider German Village for an excellent dining experience as well. It hosts two of the city's best restaurants: The hip Barcelona, with its eclectic mix of European flavors and lively atmosphere, and Schmidt's Restaurant, in business since 1886 and serving healthy portions of some of the best German fare you'll ever experience.

      American Lit majors will especially enjoy a stop at the Thurber House on Jefferson Avenue, home to the great James Thurber during his young adulthood. A self-guided tour will fill you in on Thurber and his family. You'll learn what inspired many of his memorable short stories. There's even a small bookstore. Occasionally, the house hosts visiting authors and extends some writing programs.

      Spend the night pub hopping and enjoying live music. Lovers of blues and great barbecue will savor Blues Station on West Vine. North High Street offers a wealth of vibrant venues, including Oldfield's on High, a local favorite famous for its mix of live musical performances, and a jazz Mecca known as Dick's Den.

      Shop until you drop at Columbus City Center on South Third Street, a massive tri-level mall that's home to approximately 100 retailers, including a gigantic Macy's. Eateries include an outpost of local favorite Max & Erma's, a Sbarro's, and the healthy Salad Creations.
