Traced to ancient Magadha (6th century BCE–5th century CE), ruled by Shishunaga dynasty (founder Bimbisara, Buddha's contemporary). Succeeded by Nanda dynasty (Kshatriya), then Mauryan dynasty (Chandragupta Maurya, also claimed Buddha descent). Mauryas ruled much of the subcontinent.
Post-Mauryan, Gautam Rajputs rose in Mewar, Marwar, Amber, resisting Mughal and British invasions. Known for martial traditions, community solidarity, and arts patronage.
