Although most people don't travel to Texas with water activities in mind, the Lone Star State has more than 600 miles of sand along its southern coast. Corpus Christi and Texas City, for example, are located on the Gulf of Mexico and offer plenty of fun in the sun. Even if you are hundreds of miles north in the heart of Texas, you can still enjoy a day on the water at one of these lakes near Dallas.
There are plenty of hotels and campgrounds near this beach, which is about a 30-minute drive from Dallas, but it remains relatively free of crowds. The surrounding wilderness is peaceful and conducive to sitting under a tree and just watching the clouds roll by. Centrally located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Grapevine Lake has 146 miles of shoreline and offers plenty of things to do. The lake is a popular destination for fishing and recreational water activities such as water skiing, sailing, jet skiing, kayaking and wind surfing. There are also great trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding. You can also find camping spots, picnic facilities and even a small general store to pick up groceries.

Just 15 minutes east of downtown Dallas, Lake Ray Hubbard has earned a national reputation among sailors. If you're looking for excellent sailing and recreational boating opportunities, this is the place to be. There is no swimming allowed, and there are no camping facilities, but the marinas offer great boat rentals and lakeside services, and the fishing also is very good. Nearby Rowlett Creek Nature Preserve offers plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails.
