Campgrounds Near Lake Somerville, Texas

In 1962 the Army Corps of Engineers began construction of Lake Somerville to control flooding. The first drops of water entered the lake in 1967, and since then it has become a popular central Texas recreational facility. The 11,000-acre lake provides ample opportunities for fishing, swimming and boating. A handful of campgrounds lie within the general vicinity of the lake, offering visitors a range of camping options.
  1. Lake Somerville State Park & Trailway

    • Not only does the Lake Somerville State Park & Trailway border large portions of the lake's north and south shores, but it contains more than 20 miles of hiking, biking and horse trails, a 350-acre pond and a variety of campsites. The park has 100 developed campsites for RVs, tents and equestrian use that have electrical and water hookups and modern bathrooms with showers. The park also has 10 walk-in sites with water and 10 equestrian sites with water. For the minimalist, the park's 50 walk-in sites provide a primitive camping experience without the luxuries of potable water and bathroom; campers must hike anywhere from 2.5 to 10 miles to reach these sites.

    Lake Somerville Marina & Campground

    • Lake Somerville Marina & Campground in Brenham puts guests directly at the lake. The campground offers 96 sites with 30- or 50-amp electrical service and water hookups as well as 40 primitive sites. Each site can hold one camper or two cars. The campground has a public bathroom and shower house as well as two RV dump stations. The marina has a boat ramp launch and a general store that sells hunting and fishing licenses, bait, camping and fishing equipment, food and drinks. Guests can rent jet skis and boat slips.

    Big Creek Marina

    • Big Creek Marina covers 150 acres of lakeside property, with more than 50 of those designated for primitive tent camping. The campground's more developed sites feature space for one RV or one tent and have 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups. Guests can also stay in one of the resort's cabins, some of which are located along the waterfront, which feature amenities like heating and air-conditioning, kitchen appliances and utensils, and linens and pillows. The resort has a fishing pier, a beach area with swimming, nature trails and a bath house.
