Public Campgrounds Located Near Childress, Texas

Childress, Texas is a city in Childress County, about seven hours from Austin.     • Fair Park in Childress has five campsites for RV campers that are big-rig accessible. This pet-friendly park has water and 30-amp electrical hookups. You'll find a sports field in the park and a paved walkway around a small lake. The walkway can also be used for walking your dog. Fair Park is less than five minutes from the Childress County Heritage Museum and Park Lake, and about 20 minutes to Baylor Lake.

    Copper Breaks State Park

    • The over-1,898-acre Copper Breaks State Park in Quanah, Texas, is about 45 minutes from Childress. The park has campsites with water and electricity; equestrian campsites with water; a primitive camping area and a group camp area with water. The camping areas have restrooms with and without showers, group picnic pavilion, group picnic area, meeting room, swimming beach, boat ramp, boat dock, fishing pier and a dump station. You'll find playgrounds, an interpretive center and two lakes. Activities include hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding on trails, and horseshoes, basketball and volleyball areas. Entrance and camping fees are placed in honor boxes located at the park's headquarters and restrooms.

    Quartz Mountain State Park

    • Quartz Mountain State Park, in Granite, Oklahoma, is less than two hours from Childress. This pet-friendly, 4,284-acre park has five camping areas with 20 full-hookup sites, 100 sites with electric and water hookups (of which five are handicap accessible) and 99 primitive sites. Facilities and amenities include a 6,260-acre lake, sandy beaches, handicap-accessible restrooms and showers, dump stations, boat ramps, group camping area, nature center and a store. The park's activities include boating, fishing or water skiing, metal detecting, ORV riding, wildlife watching and miniature golf. Quartz Mountain State Park has a 14-day camping limit and camping is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Black Kettle and McClellan Creek National Grasslands

    • Lake McClellan and Lake Marvin in Texas, and Skipout Lake, Spring Creek Lake and Black Kettle Recreation Area in Oklahoma, are recreation areas with camping facilities. Located in the Cibola National Forest in the Black Kettle and McClellan Creek National Grasslands, about two hours from Childress, the campgrounds here are open year-round. The campgrounds offer only tent camping, except for Lake McClellan and Lake Marvin, which also have RV hookups. Most of the campgrounds have toilets, drinking water, picnic tables and garbage disposal facilities. Campfires are allowed. Activities include picnicking, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking and cross-country skiing. Most sites charge a fee for picnicking and camping.
