Known as "Port of the Cow," Port Lavaca, Texas is an important community center in Calhoun County. It is a favorite place for birders and photographers. There are more than 400 different species of birds and eight birding sites on the Texas Birding Trail. Visitors can also enjoy pleasure and commercial fishing, ranching and agriculture. There miles of beaches, several bait and tackle shops and waterfowl hunting. Other activities include golfing, kayaking, and drifting.
Alamo Beach is a small but historical and growing bay front community under development. Alamo Beach, is about two miles southeast of Port Lavaca surrounded by the east by Lavaca Bay. This town was established during the first decade of the 20th century and a seaside pavilion was built to attract tourists to the area.
Magnolia is a beachfront community comprised of wooden homes, shrimp workers, one park and one motel with a population of about 300 friendly residents. An attraction for birdwatchers and fisherman, Magnolia Beach offers fishing, shelling, crabbing, and one of the premier birdwatching spots in America with the highest spring bird count, according to the National Audobon Society.
The Lighthouse Beach and Bird Sanctuary is a great place for the family visiting the Port Lavaca area. Waterfront camping, a beautiful sandy beach swimming pool and playgrounds are part of the family enjoyment. Birdwatchers have the Formosa Wetland Walkway and Alcoa Bird Tower, which are made completely out of recycled plastic. Other great features include: lighted fishing pier, barbecue and picnic area, boat ramp, nature trails, and scenic views.
