Monrovia: Africa's Capital Named for a U.S. President

Monrovia, capital of Liberia, was founded in 1822 and named after James Monroe (5th U.S. President, 1817–1825). The city began as a settlement for freed African-American slaves through the American Colonization Society and became Liberia's capital upon independence in 1847.
