At its height, in the 14th century, Timbuktu was a great hub of Islamic learning and trade in West Africa. Its libraries held thousands of manuscript books and scholars from across the region studied science, mathematics, architecture, philosophy, ethics, medicine, language, literature, linguistics, astronomy, law, logic, Quranic sciences, and religious rituals, among other topics.
