Tanganyika and Tanzania: Same Country? No—Tanganyika Became Tanzania.
Tanganyika and Tanzania are not the same country today. Tanganyika is a historical name for the mainland portion of what is now Tanzania.
Timeline
- 1961 (Dec 9): Tanganyika gains independence from UK (Julius Nyerere, PM).
- 1963 (Dec 10): Zanzibar gains independence (Sultanate, then revolution Jan 1964).
- 1964 (Apr 26): Tanganyika + Zanzibar unite → United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
- 1964 (Oct 29): Renamed United Republic of Tanzania (Tanganyika + Zanzibar + ia).
- Since: "Tanganyika" used informally for mainland Tanzania (Mainland Tanzania), but no sovereign state bears the name.
Structure Today
- Mainland Tanzania (former Tanganyika): 99% land area, 95%+ population.
- Zanzibar (Unguja + Pemba islands): Semi-autonomous, own president, parliament, laws (non-union matters).
- Union matters: Foreign affairs, defense, currency, citizenship, higher education.
Key Distinction
Tanganyika = historical entity (1961–1964) / geographic term for mainland.
Tanzania = sovereign state since 1964 (UN member, AU, EAC, SADC).
Confusion persists because "Tanganyika" appears in older texts, organizational names (Tanganyika Law Society), and regional identities.
