Fly into the San Diego International Airport, conveniently located only 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The McClellan-Palomar Airport might have fewer delays, but the schedule is limited and only a couple of airlines fly there.
Travel by train directly into downtown San Diego. Amtrak's terminal is located within walking distance of many major hotels. COASTER trains also serve the area and connect with Metrolink trains from Los Angeles.
Save extra money by booking a bus trip into San Diego. Greyhound buses will deliver you to the downtown station while Megabus routes might require transfers throughout the city.
Book your accommodations as far in advance as possible to avoid the spring break rush. Search for hotels by the beaches, in the downtown area or other well-known areas like Point Loma or South Bay by visiting SanDiego.org (see Resources below).
San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System is a reliable and affordable way to get around downtown. While the MTS bus system is great for downtown, you're better off renting a car if you're planning to travel to other parts of the city.
Hop aboard the San Diego Trolley to ride between downtown and the eastern and southern parts of the city. Trolley lines are indicated by color (orange, green and blue) and are fairly easy to navigate. It's possible to purchase unlimited day passes.
Visit Sea Port Village for shopping and dining. This 14-acre entertainment complex is located near the Pacific Highway and West Harbor Drive. It boasts over 50 shops and a host of different restaurants.
Head north to sunny Los Angeles for a day trip. The trip only takes a couple of hours and can be done by car, bus or train. Popular attractions include the beaches of Venice, Malibu and Santa Monica, as well as the tourist hotspots in Hollywood.
Cross the border into Mexico and spend the day in Tijuana. You'll find plenty of inexpensive places to party. Carefully plan a day trip to Tijuana, as there are many unique risks that go with visiting border towns, especially during the busy spring break season.
