How to Plan a Spring Break Trip to Miami

Miami has earned its reputation as Florida's "Magic City." In addition the amazing natural beauty of the beaches, Miami is an international hotspot for people who love great food, lively parties and an exciting nightlife. You'll find plenty of ways to plan for a spring break trip to Miami.

Instructions

  1. Make Your Travel Plans

    • 1

Load up your car and take a road trip to Miami. The city can be reached by several major highways, including Interstate 75 and Interstate 95. Traffic can get bad during spring break.

    • 2

Fly into the Miami International Airport. Plan for travel delays during spring break, especially when departing. Located just a half-hour outside of town, the Fort Lauderdale International might offer cheaper fares and less congestion.

    • 3

Arrive by train. Amtrak runs several trains to and from Miami daily. While train tickets can be an economical alternative to air travel, many of the train routes on the Eastern Seaboard experience delays due to freight lines.

    • 4

Maximize your choice in hotels by making early reservations. Beachfront hotels and resorts will keep you in the center of the action, while nearby motels will help you plan your spring break on a budget. Check with the Miami-Florida website for a list of different hotels (see Resources below).

Visit the Beautiful Parks and Beaches

    • 5

Soak up some rays at Lumus Park Beach. This is one of the most famous beaches in the Miami area and is frequently used for shooting film and TV shows. Portions of the beach allow topless sunbathing and there's a gay and lesbian enclave near 12th Street.

    • 6

Surf at Haulover Beach Park. This beach is a favorite for water sports enthusiasts as well as tourists. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and recreational activities for non-surfers too. A lifeguard staff is on duty throughout the day.

    Travel Within Miami

    • 7

Use the Metrorail to travel between downtown and the popular Dadeland Mall area. This economical and safe elevated train system stops service at midnight.

    • 8

Get around downtown Miami by using the Metromover. A smaller version of the Metrorail, the Metromover is free of charge and is one of the most popular ways to get from one downtown tourist location to the next.
