President of Eritrea: Isaias Afwerki

Isaias Afwerki has been President of Eritrea since independence on 24 May 1991. He led the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) during the 30-year war for independence from Ethiopia.

Born 1946 in Asmara; studied engineering in Addis Ababa, expelled for activism; joined EPLF, became leader in 1987. Under his leadership, EPLF won independence in 1991.

Afwerki is Africa's longest-serving head of state and fourth-longest globally. His rule is criticized as authoritarian, with allegations of human rights abuses (torture, arbitrary detention). He defends his governance as necessary for stability against external threats.
