According to the World Food Programme, an estimated 272,000 people died from hunger in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2021. This figure is likely an undercount, as it excludes deaths from malnutrition-related diseases.
The DRC remains one of the world's most food-insecure nations. Conflict in the east has displaced millions, disrupting farming and market access. Climate shocks—droughts and floods—are increasing in frequency and severity, further eroding food security. Over 26 million people face acute hunger (IPC Phase 3+), making the DRC the largest hunger crisis globally.
Addressing this requires sustained humanitarian access, conflict resolution, and investment in resilient agriculture.
